Enjoy being engaged!
Be in the moment and enjoy this special time together. Start storyboarding your ideal wedding day. Discuss it together. What do you picture? Casual or Black Tie? Rustic or Fairy tale? Local or Destination? Wedding SA has real weddings you can browse for inspo.
Tell your family and friends
Announce your engagement and discuss your wedding plans with your family and friends. Find out if any VIPs (parents, potential bridal party members) have commitments that would rule out certain dates for people you really want attending your wedding.
Decide on the style of wedding
Your wedding style will narrow your venue choice. Venues often book many months, or years in advance. Once you have your wedding style, then it becomes easier to pick your venue. The most popular styles are: Fairytale = city ballroom Rustic = country or winery Beach = coastal or water views DIY = community hall, sporting venue, private home Destination = somewhere with great views and accommodation. Check out the Wedding SA venues or catering companies and make some enquiries as to availability and pricing.
Set your budget
Once you’re received info on potential venues, you can think about your budget. Talk to your parents and see if they plan on contributing towards your wedding. Think about how much you can save and afford to spend on your wedding. You might like to open a separate account for wedding savings and spending. Once you have a rough budget you can consider how many people you can afford to have at each venue. Of course, it’s also an option to ask people to donate cash in lieu of a gift to help off-set the cost. Wedding SA has a budget planner you can download to help you out.
Typically it is the reception venue selection that set’s the date. Then couples consider their ceremony venue – which may be at the same venue. Wedding SA has some great ceremony venues to consider – gardens, beaches and churches.
Photographers, video and cars!
Wedding photographers and cars can also be booked out many months, or years in advance. Don’t forget a video! Many couples skip the video, but it’s an gorgeous way to relive the forgotten or never seen moments. Have a browse through Wedding SA to find your preferred suppliers.
Your choice of celebrant can make or break your ceremony. Meet with a few and make sure they make you feel relaxed and confident. This will help with any nerves on the day.
Flowers, Decoration, Decor, Hire, Cake
What are you going to need to make your venue fabulous? Do you need to hire chairs and crockery for a DIY wedding? Will you have floral arbors and centerpieces? Some venue packages will include decorations – check what is included – it may be centerpieces, chair covers, etc. They may also include a wedding cake. Consider a floral theme – it could be colour or style based. Remember that you’ll be holding your bouquet throughout the ceremony and photos – they can get heavy! Will your wedding cake be used as dessert? This will determine what size your bakery will recommend. You can also get different tiers with different flavours! Heavenly! xx
Music and Entertainment
Musicians at your ceremony can set a lovely mood for your wedding. Other entertainment options are endless – DJ, swing band, jazz singers, band. Photobooths can be fun too!
Work out your guest list. Select your bridal party. It can be less stressful to select your bridal party closer to your wedding date, eg 3 months before. It’s easier to not select someone, than have to un-select them. Wedding SA has a guest list and seating planner you can download to help you out. Invitations! Send out invitations for your hens or bucks party, and then the wedding. Typically wedding invitations are sent 3 months in advance. Although this is flexible, and sometimes a save-the-date is important especially for friends or family that might need to travel a long way, arrange time off work, or save up to attend!
Yay! This can be any time you like. Soon after your wedding day, or some time later. Many travel agents offer a honeymoon registry and can be an easy, but fabulous gift from your guests. If you are planning on changing your name, ensure you have your passport and travel documents in the same name! It might also be necessary to have a credit card in this name too, especially when confirming bookings or collecting tickets.
The last details
Maybe you’re looking for something unique to finish off the day? Or a dance studio to WOW your guests with a special routine? A thank-you gift for your bridal party and / guests.
If you’re planning a wedding in Adelaide or regional South Australia then you’ll need a marriage celebrant! Whether your ceremony will be formal or casual it’s important that you connect well with your wedding celebrant. The ideal wedding celebrant will be someone who makes you feel natural and relaxed. You should be able to pick up on their friendliness and organisational skills at your initial meeting. They should show genuine interest in crafting an unique wedding ceremony for you that will incorporate aspects of your romantic journey along with the necessary legal requirements. Reach out to a few celebrants, have a chat with them about your wedding ideas, and see whom you feel most comfortable with.
You might also like to check and see if your short-listed celebrants will be conducting any other weddings in Adelaide on your chosen date, and see how they plan to accommodate the timing of the ceremonies. You don’t want them stuck in traffic when they should be at your wedding!
Some celebrants will also offer a PA system or microphone to ensure your guests can hear you well. This can be particularly important if you plan on having a video taken on your day. Be sure to give your videographer your celebrant’s details so they can plan the best way to capture your wedding.
Similarly, some celebrants can provide a signing table along with special pens and more. Be sure to ask what extra touches they provide as part of their wedding service.
Best wishes for finding your perfect Adelaide wedding celebrant. Here’s a list of some of Adelaide’s most popular wedding celebrants.
Happy wedding planning. xx

Look through websites and blogs for wedding images you like. Be sure to view images of the same wedding to get a feel for how the photographer documents a wedding. Create a shortlist of wedding photographers and meet with them. You’ll want a photographer who makes you feel at ease so you can enjoy your wedding photo shoot. Often it is ideal to have a pre-wedding or engagement shoot to give you a feel for how your wedding day photography will go.
How long should I hire my wedding photographer for?
Some wedding photographers charge by the hour, others have packages for a specified number of hours, some offer full day coverage. How much of your day do you wish captured? Couple getting ready at one or multiple locations? Ceremony is a must. Photoshoot afterwards? Reception arrival, but also including speeches? Cake cutting? First dance? Couple leaving?
How much does wedding photography cost?
The cost for your wedding photography will vary according to number of hours, creativity and experience of the photographer, amount and style of image editing, the delivery of an on-line or printed album, the delivery of printed images / canvas and other services that wedding photographers can offer – including 2nd shooter, travel, video or drone coverage. Some photographers charge by the hour, others have packages which can be altered to suit your budget and needs. Some photographers have short packages from $500. Most couples spend between $3000-$4000.
Do I need a wedding album?
Some couples skip the wedding album and just receive their images on USB. This is great for those with smaller budgets, but keep in mind that digital data can corrupt and you wouldn’t want your wedding photos to be accidentally deleted! A wedding album is a great way to show family and friends the highlights of your day.
Do I need my images re-touched?
Most couples prefer to have ‘natural’ images from their wedding day. Some photographers deliver images as taken. Other wedding photographers apply filters and other creative digital touches to achieve their photographic style which might still appear natural to most people. Be sure to discuss digital editing and other creative enhancements with short-listed photographers and determine if you would like re-touching and if it is a part of their package or extra cost.
A hens or bucks party can be held at any time, however a couple of weeks before the wedding is common. It’s a great chance to escape from any wedding planning stress and to get excited for the big day.
Who pays for the hens or bucks party?
Typically guests pay for themselves. However, it is not unusual for the bridal couple to cover the costs.
Who should be invited to the hens or bucks party?
The guest list should be made up of the bridal party as well as good friends and family members who are also invited to the wedding. Typically the best man or maid of honour will host the party and should be inviting the guests. They will work with the bride or groom to finalise the guest list.
What is the point of a hens or bucks party?
It’s typically seen as a celebration of the last days of single life.
