Honeymoon FAQ

Do I need to go on a honeymoon right after my wedding?

No, you can go on a honeymoon any time you like.

How long does a honeymoon last?

It’s up to the couple, their budget, and how much time they have available.

Who pays for a honeymoon?

Traditionally the groom or the groom’s parents paid for the honeymoon. However, most couple’s today tend to pay for their own. Some couple’s have a honeymoon gift registry whereby wedding guests can contribute towards the cost of the honeymoon.

Where is the best honeymoon destination?

The best honeymoon destination will vary depending on the couple, their budget, likes, time available. Some active couples will love a high intensity honeymoon that could include diving, white water rafting, bungee jumping. Other couple’s will enjoy down time and massages, theatre productions, fine food and wine experiences, and exploring somewhere new. Consider what you enjoy doing together and build the best honeymoon around this.

What do I need to know about booking a honeymoon that I might not know already?

Research your destination and check for local events which may see accommodation book out or be more expensive, check the weather conditions to ensure they’ll be ideal for the type of activities you are planning, also check to make sure they aren’t closed for the down season. Be sure to tell vendor’s it’s your honeymoon when you book, you never know they may upgrade your room, flight, experience, or offer a special gift. If you are changing your name after your wedding, ensure all bookings and travel documents – including your passport – match your new name. Buy travel insurance, ideally this should be purchased once you begin paying for your honeymoon, just in-case you cannot travel on your honeymoon or need to defer the date for an unforeseen event. Check with your doctor to see if you need any vaccinations. Register your travel on Smart Traveller and keep up to date with travel warnings. Be sure to check that any souvenirs you purchase are not restricted or not allowed back in to Australia or the state – think food items, seeds, wooden objects, items subject to duty like alcohol or cigarettes, etc.

Can we have more than one honeymoon?

Sure! Some couples have a short honeymoon after their wedding, then once they’ve saved up some more money, maybe for their 12 month anniversary, they’ll go on another honeymoon.
